Once I have the basic lines right I move to pen and generally start with the eyes or face, followed by the outline. It is still early enough to see errors and make adjustments. For example, in this picture the right side eye si too big but you will see as we progress I will make changes to absorb the error.

I am going to show this along the way to a finished drawing. First off I do a accurate line drawing in pencil. I pick out the main areas, the highlights, outline and placement on paper. I do this in pencil so that I can correct as I go without leaving pen lines behind.

This is the first drawing I did of my daughter Rebecca. For that reason it will always be an extremely special drawing to me.

After Mucha

Alphonse Mucha is one of my favourite graphic artists/designers. His paintings are so light, even though those we see most have heavy outlines. I was lucky enough to see an exhibition of his works in Stockholm, Sweden a few years ago. The scale was magnificent - I'd been so used to seeing his work on postcards and in books I had not realised the massive scale of some works.

This is really more a doodle than a sketch. Quite obviously based on the composition which Mucha reused so often in his poster art.

This is the finished painting of Greenfields harbour down the road from my home in Galway, Ireland. It is a lovely little harbour and very busy during the fishing season. It takes a lot of skill to navigate in and out of the harbour and also takes some time.

This is a terrible initial painting sketch of Edinburgh castle. I really hate it and as far as I know have thrown it away since. But one of my aims for this site is to show the bad (or terrible) along with the good, and you can't fit that bill much better than this!

Janis Joplin

This is a preliminary (tiny) painting of Janis Joplin for a later painting. As you can see it is simplified, and askew...but it is shown here about 3 times the original size.

Totally different to the final painting, so probably just let me get rid of my bad bits (I hope). I sold the full painting so only one person will know now.
